REPURPOSING YOUR CLOTHES

REPURPOSING YOUR CLOTHES

Fast fashion has become a major contributor to pollution, with increasing clothing production harming the environment. A survey shows 57% of consumers are concerned, and 59% are aware of its environmental impact.

Interviews reveal that cheap prices lead to frequent disposal, while others find it hard to reduce consumption despite knowing its harm. Some interviewees suggest donating clothes as a sustainable option, and one fashion student repurposes clothing to extend its life.
Repurposing clothes benefits the environment by reducing energy use, with up to 4 billion kWh saved and less reliance on fossil fuels. Fast fashion also causes 10% of global carbon emissions. Repurposed clothing can cut emissions by 25% and save 3 kg of CO2 per item.
Water use is also high, with 7,500–10,000 liters needed to make a single pair of jeans, contributing to 20% of global water waste. Reusing clothes can save around 88.89 gallons of water per item. Upcycling, a related method, reduces landfill waste by extending clothing life using sustainable materials.
Psychologically, upcycling sparks creativity and self-expression, offering a therapeutic alternative to the uniformity of fast fashion. It promotes mental well-being by allowing experimentation with fabric, color, and design. Additionally, repurposing helps avoid the stressful and hazardous conditions of fast fashion production.
