REPURPOSING YOUR CLOTHES – Iteration3

Repurposing Your Clothes

Fast fashion has become a major contributor to pollution, with increasing clothing production harming the environment. A survey shows 57% of consumers are concerned, and 59% are aware of its environmental impact.
Interviews show that low prices encourage frequent disposal, while others struggle to cut consumption despite knowing its impact. Some suggest donating clothes, while others repurpose garments to extend their lifespan.
Repurposing clothes reduces energy use saving up to 4 billion kWh and lowers reliance on fossil fuels. With fast fashion causing about 10% of global emissions, repurposing can cut emissions by 25% and save around 3 kg of CO₂ per item.
Clothing production is water-intensive, with 7,500–10,000 liters needed for one pair of jeans and contributing to 20% of global water waste. Reusing clothes can save about 88.89 gallons per item, while upcycling further reduces landfill waste by extending garment life.
Upcycling encourages creativity and self-expression, offering a therapeutic alternative to fast fashion. It supports mental well-being through experimentation with design, while also helping avoid the stressful and unsafe conditions of fast fashion production.
